Are asking. We want the results of the inspector general’s review we want a clear explanation of the policies and practices that led to their their entry without they warrant . We want to know whether the behavior demonstrated is consistent with the with the guidelines . So we , we , this is , this is you really just shocking behavior by the ICE agents and and we want to get to the bottom of whether they just happened to 2 exercises on their own or this is how they’re being trained interacted .
Have you gotten any response yet he wrote the letter on Friday.
No , we have not.
Do you take issue with anything besides the constitutionality of the search anything other words. Besides the fact that the agents went into the home without a warrant .
Well , there is another question here that that has to be clarified and and we , we have heard , but I have not seen anything definitive that’s why relent won it and have the results do that in this case , the individual that they were following it was a US citizen. I’m not going . I don’t know that that’s been documented , that’s what we have heard and that that’s what he was released so quickly , but that leads to another set of questions of how ISAs is proceeding in their their their their processes and and there there , certainly , we are very concerned about many related issues about ICE agents hanging out at courthouses hanging around schools that are out of having a significant impact on our our community and particularly sessions Attorney General Sessions effort to turn our police and sheriff’s forces into ICE agents which the leaders of the police team in Sheriff teams keep saying if if if you do that you then result in a lot more crime because you simply have the community that will not not cooperate with you and so many many issues here . Apart from just the constitutional issue .
One of the issues that come up in this case and really in cases in Oregon in the past in the recent past and all over the country is 2 things. It is often now ICE agents are are not wearing uniforms or jacket and say ice on the back and they often do not identify themselves by name . They were asked repeatedly in this video , you know what’s your name . The couple different agents were asked and they said , we don’t need to tell you that , how do you feel about the fact that in a lot of cases . Now , what we’re seeing are the actions of effectively secret police .
It’s it’s it’s very intimidating and concerning I try to picture yourself in your own home. They’ve been and 2 agencies come in when you may be a friends at your house and opens a door in they they walk in and they don’t identify themselves and they won’t give their names and in the weather , asked for a warrant to say have one and you just feel like you know like your your world has been inappropriately ask assaulted in the fact that you can’t get a name of an individual that’s very concerning because citizens should be able to hold to account the behavior of our of our uniform well I say uniform , they were in uniform either about of but of our enforcement officials .
In an earlier letter by a Spokesperson from ice they they addressed it. This was from a Portland case they address this question of not wearing uniforms they basically said that that there is that they they don’t wear uniforms at some point now because the situation is very tense and they’re afraid for their own safety . How do you respond to that .
Well , there’s certainly I would turn to experts for that discussion. I think the . The point that I’m surprised about is when asked to it after they have and then apply themselves as agents . You know in this setting , and they’re not being willing to give badge number or and a name is is is of concern , how does , how does a citizen and follow up and and protest the behavior or aggressive behavior if if you don’t know who it is who walk into your home or or who confronted you .
I’m talking right now to organs junior Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley you’ve written an earlier letter to the Head Of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement , after the arrest in September of Ysidro Andrade to he’s an American citizen. He’s worked for Washington County for a number of years now , can you remind people about that case and why you and Senator Wyden wrote that letter .
Now there was a case involving an individual leaving the the court and then being confronted on the street. The agents in that case had a picture of an individual that they were were seeking to find and the picture did not not match the individual and it was the kind of another case of trying to understand how is ice operating what are their policies and practices and does the there there could be facing himself right outside a courthouse result in individuals been run unwilling to provide information or unwilling to carry forth the case of say domestic violence are a whole series of other other things whether there should be places where ice is doing more harm than good .
Many people on the left under the Obama Administration they they saw an increase in arrests and deportations during those 8 years and then some people called him but the porter in chief. At that time . Did you write any letters to advertise under the previous administration .
Well to be to get an accurate response. I have to check on that , that that day that I don’t have a specific letter in mind when you’re asking that question .
What do you see as the biggest differences between the Obama era policies when it comes to Immigrations enforcement and the Trump-era policies.
Well , a couple things , one is that Trump has dismantled the protection for our dreamers young folks who came here as young children and other young adults who were there and call each other teenagers who many of them didn’t even know that they were born outside the United States that is an issue where we’re trying to resolve in this upcoming well hopefully in this December period when we , when we have the conversation over the December 8th bill to continue funding of the government that we really need to address us cause those folks are in limbo right now about the future , many them only speaking English and only knowing know in America and a second factor is certainly the the intense effort of of the Attorney General to turn our our police into ICE agents and that that is the police chiefs and and others are weighing in and saying you’re you’re just going to cause so much crime and in doing so because you can’t solve crime if you can’t get cooperation from the career. You can’t get cooperation . If the police are agents acting as license .
Sena Merkley just briefly on a totally different topic today your Senate colleagues on the Republican side are meeting with the President to talk about , among other things , there were plans for overhaul of the tax system. What would it take for you to vote yes on the planet’s eventually unveiled to us .
It would take a completely different bill the the President repeats , a phrase that is completely inaccurate. Time and time again . He says this , these are very tax cuts for middle class these funds are going to go to the wealthiest Americans . The bill does exactly the opposite since virtually all the benefits to the wealthiest 1% of Americans and and so I hope in the in the republican gathering today with the presidency . Mr. President you promised a bill for the middle class but but now it’s like you’re supporting a bill for the wealthiest of the wealthy in an already highly wealth polarized society where how how can that possibly help all families thrive . I hope to give a hard time and this should give themselves a hard time we’re gonna be willing to consider this bill .
Jeff Merkley , thanks very much for joining us and Happy Birthday.
I think you very much. The caretaker .
That is US Senator Jeff Merkley.
Earlier this month the 10-month-old boy Fund found unresponsive in Northeast Portland daycare center. He died at a hospital 2 days later it was the second time in the last year and a half that an infant died after being in the care of this particular facility . State officials have said they’re gonna currently close the Broadway Children’s Centre the Oregonian Brad Schmidt is covered , not just this latest death . But the bigger picture of the way the state regulates more than 4,000 facilities . He joins me that’s good to have you back on the show . Thanks for having me . What do we actually know about this latest death at this particular day care center .
Well , state officials haven’t released a lot of information , but we do know that it was tired some in some way to nap the Speaker had put down to children for a nap and the infant was found unresponsive , I believe 16 minutes after now claim were set to begin work Heinz of investigations are going on right now. Well , there’s 3 . The police are investigating the Department of Human Services Child Protective Services . They have a subsequent essentially daycare division and foster care division that looks into this and then the office of childcare .
