Live from NPR News. In Washington , I’m Korva Coleman Senate Republicans ran into problems yesterday with their tax overhaul legislation and PR Susan Davis says Senate Republican leaders hope to hold a vote on the tax package by today , but still have issues to solve .
Well , I would still face a lot of obstacles to get this bill passed. But the most immediate challenge they’re facing is convincing Republicans like Bob Corker of Tennessee and Jeff Flake of Arizona that this tax cut won’t blow a bigger hole in the deficit and the national debt to that and they’re facing 2 major problems . The forces that only nonpartisan Senate analysis of the bill came out yesterday , and said no . These tax cuts will not pay for themselves . In fact they will add to the deficit to the tune of about 1 trillion dollars over the next decade . And second , the Senate rules wouldn’t let them include something that Corker wanted in the bill . It was called a trigger that would have essentially where tax increases automatically kick in if this economic growth that Republicans are promising didn’t happen .
NPR Susan Davis the Senate Ethics Committee is opening a preliminary investigation into Minnesota Democratic Senator Al Franken , several women have alleged him of sexual misconduct. A spokesman for Michigan Democratic Congressman John Conyers says he is in the hospital recovering from a stress related ailment . He too has been similarly accused House Speaker Paul Ryan has spoken to the issue of sexual harassment .
I think we’re having a watershed moment in this country. I think this is a defining moment in this country and I think it needs to be a defining moment in this country . I think we’re all horrified at the stories we’ve been seeing unfold in the last few weeks , I think we’re all realizing that sexual harassment in America is absolutely pervasive and it’s got to go and we need and it , and nowhere more is this important to set a standard an example than elected officials . We should be whole held to a high standard .
Meanwhile , Alabama Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore continues to deny accusations of sexual misconduct including assault as he campaigns for office a case pending in Washington is raising some questions about the Trump administration’s handling of terrorism suspects as NPR’s Ryan Lucas , reports the defendant is a US citizen.
The American Civil Liberties Union brought the lawsuit on behalf of an unidentified man who has been in US military custody in Iraq for more than 2 months. The ACLU is demanding that the US government justify its holding of the American citizen without charge or access to a court . The man was reportedly picked up by a US-allied militia in Syria and handed over to the American military . He is suspected of having fought for the Islamic state , the Justice Department says in court filings Thursday that FBI agents did inform him during questioning of his right to remain silent and his right to an attorney . The government says the man has requested a lawyer , it adds . He has not been questioned for lawn Foresman purposes sense Ryan Lucas , NPR News , Washington .
A San Francisco jury has acquitted an undocumented Mexican immigrant of the murder of a California woman president , Trump had used the case to demand stricter US immigration rules you’re listening to NPR news from Washington.
With W-C you news and my chorus , it looks like the legislature will spend much of December fighting over an overhaul of how the state overseas local retirement funds. We have more from Rick Pluto .
Democrats and police and firefighter unions are against the plan rolled out by Republican leaders. The bills would require the state to examine every local government pension fund local governments with underfunded retiree pensions would have to come up with a plan to fix that otherwise a financial management team appointed by the Governor and with broad authority would step in State Senate Majority Leader Arlen me off says he understands a lot of people are not happy with the plan .
When everybody doesn’t like something about you’re probably in the right spot. So we’re , we’re rapidly approaching now .
Mick off estimates 20 to 30 local retirement funds around the state are in trouble. I’m Rick put it at the state Capitol .
New research from Michigan State University indicates gun restrictions , reduce the number of intimate partner homicides. The study looked at more than 3 decades of data from 45 states to compare gun restrictions and into partner violence April zero Lee is the lead researcher on the study . She says in states where domestic abusers were barred from getting guns into a partner homicides went down .
So in states that have these laws. There is a 9% decrease an intimate partner homicide laws but also restrict those who’ve then convicted of violent misdemeanor crimes are associated with a 23% reduction in intimate partner homicides .
Zero says this research suggests that the idea that without guns people find another way to kill just is not true. Federal law bans abusers who are married or living with their victim from purchasing handguns in Michigan abusers can still purchase rifles and other firearms .
