This is one I’m Joshua Johnson were getting your take on the President‘s State of the Union address with Molly Ball of time Minnesota State Representative Ilhan Omar Josephson who’s a West Virginia state delegate and with you , I know how you wanted to chime in on the President‘s immigration comments before we kick off.
Yeah , I mean I think of the the ignorance that surrounds how in immigration works how families get here and who can sponsor and and the length of time that it takes sort of feeds into the fear that is being perpetuated by by the President. There is really impressed by Mali’s answer about how how this process works , and I just wanted to make sure that our listeners understand that if you someone comes here you they have to become a citizen before they can apply that takes up to 7 to 8 years to be able to go through that process to becoming a citizen and then you have to wait another 5-7 to 20 years before you can even bring someone as your baby daughter that you might have left in in in in your home country or or your husband or your ill in ailing mother . And so this isn’t something where you come here on on the first day , you just bring you know hundreds of your family members as the President and the Republicans would like to make it seem .
Tulips and what did you think of the President‘s comments on immigration. Last night , particularly because immigration is maybe one of the hottest if not the hottest , hot button right now on Capitol Hill , one of these fights that the President kind of set up by saying that deferred action for childhood arrivals Dhaka would be ending date-certain how much do you think that the State of the Union helped move us toward a solution . Well .
I know that sometimes people try they’d like to focus in on things that they’ve deemed to be more controversial but there were some other things that the President said. Like he mentioned the fact that we are a compassionate nation and we are , and I think when the President lays out a plan for how we’re going to deal with the the immigration mess that we have , you know , those 4 pillars , you know , really aren’t all that controversial and you know and citing the fact that it’s not an us-versus-them mentality that you can have compassion while expecting that our walls will be obeyed , and I actually have my roommate is a Venezuelan immigrant . She is a state senator named Patricia rocker aren’t and it took her 12 years to gain her American citizenship and so there are people here who are have come in illegally and they like the fact that the President is talking about making sure that people obey our laws with the exact same way that they did .
I should also note , since you mention the 4 pillars the President said the other pillars of this program include offering a path to citizenship for one point million illegal immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age. The second pillar is fully securing the border . The 3rd pillar would be ending the visa lottery program and the 4th one would be ending chain migration , let’s not oh do you wanna .
Like but yeah I was gonna say , I mean I think you know we don’t we don’t show compassion by a feeling Peter and and and starving Paul we show compassion by making sure that our policies are inclusive and that we are fulfilling that American promise. That’s what makes us proud Americans .
Let’s dive in on the phones now beginning in Collins Ville Alabama where Stephen is on the line here. Stephen what’s on your mind .
Yes. To my friends a graduating class of 2013 . How Israel small school of about 72 graduates were undocumented when they graduated . They were the valedictorian and the saluted for him and the senatorial was captain of the soccer team that won the state championship that here in soccer here in Alabama , where the newly elected Republican school superintendent has said . Given his 16 years experience in this town where my mother’s family goes back to the 1840s before the Civil War . It is said that he was open to a conversation that would give these kids citizenship upon graduation from my school after 6 years of scholarship and discipline because they’ve been well-bedded in their community . Donald Trump is playing an evil game with this mockery of the mantra Americans are dreamers to display the idea in politics that he weren’t from Bannan in Parliament for Paul metaphoric help Jesse Helms gain power in North Carolina and getting out was a friend of Roberto don’t we saw which gets us to him Mr. T . I have friends here in Thailand from El Salvador who one of them as a young boy . So both Roberto that we saw an Oscar Romero in the flesh to great Catholic saint , Oscar Romero and so you asked 13 arose from those violent politics and El Salvador . The important will help Jesse Helms in gender and and and and Donald Trump rings Pollyanna port , this time with a sham to be over in regard the white working class of the sad our family comes from Apalachicola I know what the white working classes , about a mile so brilliant with book strangers in their own country about the resentments of the white working class and I hope that your friend West Virginia with bone-up on that .
For horrible time 12.
Even before you go , can I just tell just ask you as a relief to the President‘s speech. You know he he did try at least he tried to set a tone that was a little more compassionate that laid out a pathway to citizenship . He said in his speech that he has one of the 4 pillars . The first one he mentioned was a pathway to citizenship . It sounds like you know what quite take the President at his word . What would he have to do to to convince you .
When you look at , you look at this President‘s rhetoric. If you look at how he became President , you look at his statement . Where is the SOB statement were in fact he called direction we Heisman Trophy winner deployed for the University of Alabama , but when he can disparage as any Eclipse one day in the next town he’s there if it was the 3 pillars have merit , but then this work would be no , but the doctor bill should be clean and if we pick up the merits of the other . The owners are the 3 pillars , I’m open to that chain migration conversation but if it has merit in this do it clean this back paying you’ve been on the table for 20 years , it’s time for America to stand up to the that’s true vision of of Abraham Lincoln and here in Alabama , the great civil rights Republican lawyer Judd frame Johnson and folks like that , no . But doubt his speech was written . He has made them tomorrow estimation knowledge of of American history just reach what’s put before him with Stephen Miller , and other people think it’s expeditious don’t trust again .
Steven appreciate you call Angel of sin : what would you say to to Stephen to people who don’t quite believe that the President meant what he said last night.
Well , I would say to Stephen. Just think about when the President said that we need to set politics aside and get the job done , you know he he mentioned Democrats he says I’m offering an open hand and so to me , you know that FEMA was woven throughout his entire speech that he is ready to get things done and you saw that when he was first elected and he had the meeting you know with the Democrats that you know really upset the Republican side , and I just think that he wants to solve problems , and I don’t want to get to a place where we are not wanting a problem to be solved because Donald Trump will get credit for having solved .
Let’s talk about the economy. President Trump had a lot to say about economic figures . Many of those rosy numbers were somewhat challenged by fact checkers , but listen , let’s listen to a part of the State of the Union , where he touted the current state of the US economy .
Since the election. We have created 2.4 million .
