You work , go online and we’ll be talking more as we move along , but we start with Jim Donovan , who is our state’s insurance commissioner longtime Louisiana political as we know , and spent many years in the Louisiana Legislature and also is the pride of Jesuit High School in New Orleans. Before we go anywhere else . We lost Rusty starve . In the last few .
Weighs indeed it was was shocking but not surprising because Rusty was a year older than me , am 73 he was 74 when he when he died , but he had been badly. I’m sure you remember a heart condition that caused a flight . He was on from Ireland back to New York to be turned around to take them back to a hospital in Ireland and then airlifted . I think the Mets so day a jet over that brought him back to the States a week or so later and he recovered in time and well enough to throw out the first pitch at a playoff game that year that’s either 2 or 3 years ago and then yesterday , I was talking to one of the local lawyers here in town for undermining Dick derbies who told me that he heard that Rusty had been hospitalized for a couple of weeks before his before his demise . So he had been battling he was large , he had gained a lot of weight . His recent in his latter years and it had that ongoing health heart health issue and and it caught up with them . But he was a great guy beloved fell really well thought out , well liked to throughout the New Orleans area as well as the city’s that he played in during his really lengthy major league career used in of course was fears starting point , and he was a star there that ultimately was traded to Montreal those you know and became LeGrand Oran they there and learned I read during or on in one of the articles after his death that he taught himself French in order to relate to the fans there in Montreal which endeared him to them and and and led to that LeGrand our own should nickname . And then I had a restaurant or 2 actually in New York and I I was talking to Dick from the airport in Houston yesterday and told him that a couple of years ago flying Southwest as I do 2 events like the one I was in Austin for a day before yesterday well yesterday and the day before and go through southwest uses Harvey instead of Houston International and I’m one of the concourses when I was changing flights one one day so a food court restaurant called Le Grand Orange and I assumed it was rusty and never did find out for sure that it was , and then a year or so ago , it was not there anymore so time goes on , and he was a . So went when might my favorite memory or newsworthy memory is when he was a senior Ejaz what we were playing a stream a high for the state championship one Ted Williams was sitting behind me in the grandstand in pursuing these stadium while and Rusty had one . It is so deep to straightaway center that the light pole is inside of the fence with no padding around it or whatever , because no kid could reach that far but he ricocheted one off of the late pole and in that that area and I read in one of the articles that Ted Williams went to his home after that game : we won the championship . The state shipping ship that day and told him kid . Don’t let anybody mess with you swing there’ll be a lot of coaches and I want to make it better . You’re a natural and Ted Williams got a consolation prize for that trip , he signed a future utility infielder for the Boston Red Sox for several years name Dalton Jones from .
Indeed , Ted Williams like Rusty stab a left handed hitter played in the majors. As a teenager and Rusty has the distinction of being one of only 4 players when concluding to a high of homered as a teenager and , as a 40-year-old . He said he had a long career , and he was quite proud of Jesuit High School , and I know that . Were you in the same class .
No , he was a year ahead of me. The ironic thing saying with Pat screen I was a year behind pad in rusty but became good friends with both through mutual friends my 2 best friends in college Jim canola and Dale Boudreau and they were classmates and good friends and team-mates . One was a team-mate . One was a classmate with rusty and Pat and so through them , I got to be good friends with with both of them well quite a class . It was , it was they won the little the American Legion National Championship and a quick funny story about that they the the state championship Legion team screen was on and Rusty Staub but Pat was captain of the football team . And so when they left the state to go to regionals and then finals he stayed and started practice in the spring in the summer with the football team that was a higher calling and duty rusty went on : they got to the finals in a fella named Dave McNally was on the hill for the Billings , Montana team and McNally was undefeated in his career as a high school pitcher ultimately as you know , a star for the Baltimore or cold Orioles Orioles yes says is a lefty , but my friend Dale Boudreau , who used to really cringe when I would accuse him of stealing the billings signs picked up on the fact that the catcher was bracing his net when McNally would throw a fastball and tilting it in holding it outside of his knee on the edge of the plate . When he was throwing a curve ball and kept going , they still couldn’t hear them but kept going first name , last name to the bad art detail of what was coming and they got on top of us 3 or 4 runs and and we , in that we they Dale and rusty in the team so rattled Lord McNally that he lost his control and walked in a bunch of runs and took them out and we won the national championship .
Well , we’re going to segue to insurance issues and Jim Darnell uncertainly in authority about this and we’re heading obviously toward the end of April and that means in about a month , will have the start of hurricane season. And this has been forecast as a busy season and you have been a big advocate on flood insurance , and if you have a desire or need and most of us probably do if we don’t already have it . This is probably the time to get it . Not when some hurricane is approach .
No doubt about it , then you make a rule. You raise a really great issue and that is there’s a 30-day wait between the time that you apply and send your first premium in before the policy actually goes into effect , and a couple of years ago we had river flooding the Atchafalaya threatened to overtop its its levees in and flood central Louisiana and they opened the Spillway in the Atchafalaya area , and many of the homeowners Boehner’s whatever you call them , some of them are very nice camps . If they are camps were without flood insurance and got the idea . Well we’ll go buy it now . Well , you can it’s going to be , have a 30-day wait unless there is an exception unless you put a mortgage on the property . So they were running to the bank and making a 10 thousand dollar loan and the NF IP caught on to that and said no no no no and issued an emergency rule and and shut that loophole down so that 30-day wait is real , and it’s important .
8-7 7-2 1-7-5 7-5 7 you’re number 2-9 7-56 33 is the local number NPP calling in Baton Rouge and you can reach us by email talk at talk Louisiana.org Jim Donovan the insurance commissioner is here. He has been a major advocate of flood insurance and you have said this is one of the best buys . It’s not usually that expensive .
Indeed not. In particular , if you’re in a low-risk area , it’s about 60 bucks a month to buy yourself coverage for the typical home in Louisiana in a low-risk area and the higher risk or really significantly subsidized by the National flood insurance Program .
We will return with more.
