We are living in difficult times. We seem to be very divided from one another and uncertain about who gets to be an American . But our stories have always united us while celebrating our differences . Personally I’ve had many instances in my own life where I found myself feeling like an outsider or being labeled as different and wanting to be able to connect to belong I’ve learned over time that sharing my own story and hearing the stories of others is a profound way in which we can all come together and share our own humanity .
From an evening celebrating the anthology it occurs to me that I am America. Here are 3 works that reflect on contemporary America through the lens of the past . Elizabeth Stroud , of all of Keitrich gives us the walk a deceptively simple story that takes an elderly man on a night time stroll through his small main neighborhood in the course of it he journeys from present to past and back again . The one and only Allen burst performs the one .
About his children something was wrong. This came to Denis Pelletier as he walked alone on the road . One night in late December , it was in chilly night and he was not dressed Ford having only a coat over his chief shirt with his pair of old jeans , he had an Ireland tended to walk but after dinner . He felt the need in him to rise and then later as his wife read you yourself a bad , he said , were I have to walk . He was 69 years old and in good shape . Though there were mornings when he fell very stiff as in blog he thought again something was your heart and it meant about his children he had 3 children . They were all married there are married young by the age of 20 just as he and his wife had married young his wife had been 18 at the time of his children’s weddings . The last his daughter’s 17 years ago . Then he did not think about how young they were even though now walking , he realized that it had been an unusual during that time for kids to Mary so young now is mind when over the classmates of his children and he realized many had waited until they were 25 or 28 or even like the really handsome wooden cock boy 32 years old when he married his pretty yellow haired bride the cold was distracting and Denny what faster in order to warm up Christmas was 2 weeks away , and yet no snow Ed follow this stroke Denny . As strange as it did many people because he can’t remember his childhood in this very town in Maine and by Christmas time there would be snow so high . He and his friends would build forts inside the snow banks but tonight as he walked the only sound was the quiet crunching it believes beneath his sneakers . The moon was full it’s shone down on the river as he walked past the mills that windows lined up and dark . One of the mills that Washburn mill then he had worked in starting when he was 18 . It closed 30 here sicko and then he had worked in a clothing store that sold among other things . Rain slickers and rubber boots to the fishermen and to the tourists as well the mills seem more vivid to him , then the store , the memories , though he had worked there are not nearly as long as he had the store but he could remember with surprising clarity the machines that went on all night balloon room he worked in his father had worked as a loom there at the time and when Danny began . He had been lucky enough to go from sweeping the floors for 3 months to becoming a weaver and then not going after a mentor as his father had been the ear-splitting noise of the plates the frightening scooped shuttle could take effect card out of place whipping across the cloth and shipping pieces , a battle . What a thing here today . And yet it was no more it’s not loves Snuppy who had never learned to read or write and who had taken his teeth out and wash them in the water trough and then a sign and put out no washing here and the jokes about snuffing not being able to read that sign snappy had died a few years ago , many most of the men he worked at the mill were now dead somehow tonight they need shelter choir to start and which meant that the fact and then mind returned to his children . They were required , he thought too quiet really angry with him . All 3 had gone to college and his sons had moved to Massachusetts , his daughter to New Hampshire there seemed to be no jobs for them here his grandchildren were okay . They all did well at school . It was his children he wondered about as he walked last year at Denny’s 50th high school reunion , he had shown his eldest boy is your book and his son and said , Dad they coaching friendship . Oh , sure . Then he said the 3rd tackle . It’s not funny to send it said it had gotten up and walked away leaving with his yearbook open on the kitchen table times changed but Denny who had turned to walk along the river now so sense point to be called French she was no longer acceptable what then his son had not understood was that Denny had never had his feelings hurt by being called French he is then he kept walking , taking his hands deeper into his pockets him began to wonder if this was true he realized what was true when he said he Denny had accepted it to accept meant to accept much that Denny would go to work in the mills . As soon as he could . It meant that he did not expect himself to go school to pay attention to his studies did it mean these things as Denny approach the river and could see in the moonlight how the river was moving quickly he felt as though his life had been a piece of bar come that river just going along not thinking at all headed toward the waterfall . The moon was slightly to the right of him and it seemed to become brighter is he stopped to look at it . Is this why he suddenly thought of dirty Prescott .
Dori Prescott had been a beautiful girl. Oh . She was a beauty , she had walked the halls of the high school with her long blonde hair over her shoulders . She was tall and wore her height . Well , I swear large and she had a tentative smile always on her face , she had shown up at the end of their sophomore year , and she was the reason Denis and stayed in school . He just wanted to see here . Just wanted to look at her otherwise . He had been planning on quitting school and going to work in the mill his locker was not far from Doris but they shared no classes because door , along with her astonishing looks had Marines as well . She was according to teachers and even students said this the smartest student who have come through in a long time . Your father was a doctor . One day , she said . Hi , as they were at their lockers and then felt dizzy . Hi . There is , he said . And after that they were sort of free .
