Welcome to St Louis on the air. I’m Dan Marsh big news today from the regional arts commission it’s looking ahead . More on that later , after we go behind the headlines . St Louis circuit attorney Kim Gardner has been on the job for a little more , more than a year and a half now this week the riverfront Times reported that much of gardeners time in office has been largely characterized by chaos and conflict . We ask Circuit attorney gardener to join us to talk about her 20 months in the job she agreed and she joins me in studio great to have you with us .
Thank you. I appreciate being here .
What do you make of that headline could go a contentious and chaotic.
Well I any transition period when you are a new elected official taking over offers can be difficult and transition is difficult and hard for people. So , of course , as in any prior prosecutor there is going to be transition people will leave , and some people may say is chaos , but I say that’s change .
You replaced a woman who’d been in the job for a long , long time. Does that make it more difficult for you a lot of Jennifer Joyce is staff was still in place .
Well , I think when you , you look at our work under Jennifer Joyce and I appreciate the opportunity to work under Ms choice and when I was there , it was the same thing. People will talk about the circuit attorney in her , you know , efforts to push the office . Ford , the same thing with me , I mean taken that office is when you have a progressive reform-minded prosecutor and this time you have individuals who have been in the office there may say , hey , I wanted to . I wanted to do something else or I did not support those reform efforts and I share in why I understand that people are people left if they left because they wanted to go somewhere else or they do not share in the vision of the office , but I respect you know their ability to to make their choice and it’s fair .
According to the riverfront times people who talk and we have to point out that just about everybody who talked with did it anonymously. Then I mean , they were not identified . But they said , and several of them said this . That vision was not communicated very well that you were in fact standoff ish 2 of the people who were there when you got there .
Well of course I am , I’m going to disagree with that in and of course you know I can’t speak to what other individuals may have may think of about me who are no longer there. But I know that I have open door policy and I had open door policy from day one and in there we you know you look at people who are leaving their cars . A lot of of conflict for some attorneys people like things to say the same . So when you have people who are leaving who’d been around . I mean , you have our different reasons why people will say there , but you know we have a open door policy . I continue to have an open door policy . You know , and this is simply not true .
Where are you now with regard to staffing.
I mean , right now we we have you know staff in is not is not they must turn over right now and we are about 138 total People. We have about 16 positions open . I think it’s like 6 attorney positions . So we are , you know , looking to fill those positions in other positions , but right now we’re relatively stable .
How difficult are they to fill.
