Congressman Chris Collins who has been indicted on federal insider-trading charges is opting to stay.
On the ballot in November , his decision our bands local Republican Party officials desire to replace him with someone less politically top toxic but Collins name cannot be replaced without his agreement , which means that voters in the 27th Congressional District will now have a choice of Collins other the Republic line or neat on the Democratic line , one person who had hoped to see Collins bow out was Erie County controllers to find Mikael who joins us to discuss this change in circumstances to welcome back. How are you . Very well . Thank you . So how do you feel about this .
I think the most important thing right now moving forward. Is there a Republican wins the seat in New York 27 . No , I’m very thankful to the 8 county chairs , they’ve done a lot of work under very difficult circumstances . But we have to move on . Chris Collins will be on the ballot . And I think it’s incredibly important that we have a Republican maintain their feed New York 27 now . I firmly believe the Mary spent his career working hard to ship American jobs overseas to China and Korea , and we need a Republican and that’s .
What we , I mean there’s no like grieving process here. I mean that with Erie County Republican chairman Nick lying where they just said several times that he and others , and I think that would include you had worked very hard to find a replacement for Collins and and now for that opportunity is gone . You’re not disappointed .
No , not at all. I always say there’s a support group in life for people who sometimes don’t get what they want .
It’s called everybody I called everybody April we have to do. Yeah .
To play the hand you’re dealt.
Do you know. Alright . Is there . Chris Collins is on the ballot .
And I think it was important to maintain that seat in Republican hands , regardless of who’s name is on that ballot.
So , were you though the person that was in , are you know who is going to be the replacement.
I don’t know. It was my understanding that the 8 county chairs were going to meet at some point this we can make a decision because absentee ballots are being shipped to military members very soon . So it was my understanding that the 8 county chairs . Now we’re going to make a decision on a compromise candidate . Very very soon .
But you do have , you know that was you.
No , absolutely not. No indication whatsoever of who the candidate was going to be to the credit of the 8 county chairs . It was very open , honest and transparent process now are they interviewed multiple people mean it’s my understanding that those chairs are going to meet in Albany discuss it in .
Make I still I mean right and there there in Albany , they’re there there in Albany talking to record so why do you.
Think you would have made a good choice but rather than somebody like a Carl Paladino who we’ve also interviewed.
I was the strongest in the safest bet you know here at Erie County I’ve won 3 county wide elections in a very dark blue district I want and Obama presidential year , the first Republican to do so in 40 years to win county wine in a presidential year. By day , I was also the safest bet you know I’m not up for election this year I’m not up for election next year either . So if there would have been a circumstance where we play this out , that I would have been the candidate Congressman Collins at a later time would have been wrong .
