President Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been accused of sexually assaulting a high school classmate at a party in the 1980s , according to The Washington Post , the woman Dr. Christine Blazy Ford a research psychologist at Palo Alto University in Northern California , so she is willing to testify before Congress the me too movement and women’s political power , have both been strongly evident during the 2018 election cycle , which means that now. New York is also playing a very important role . And today we have , the President of now New York Sony Osorio joining us on the phone from New York City . How are you .
I’m great , thank you.
What do you think about what’s going on with this the accuser and Brett Kavanaugh.
Well it’s just explosive and I have been thinking , mostly in the last day or so back to the Anita Hill testimony.
How can you not. I mean there are so many there are so many parallels .
It really is and new this is Anita Hill 2018 and I think the big question is will we get it right this time.
When you say they get it right. What do you mean .
Well , it was , it’s been a number of. It’s been 28 years now , we certainly have moved forward as a society in understanding the degree that workplace sexual harassment happens and sexual assault . In fact , we’re in the middle of this really seismic change and awareness throughout the country about what sexual thought looked like how many women and men experience that and there is no one type of person you know we , we , we’ve been forced to look at the the mist of the stereotypes that we , we’ve held in our culture that has that has threaded through the the justice system and in our laws . You know when I started working at now one of the first things we did was removed the statue of limitations on rape . You know , we view it as a very serious crime and it is , but we had a very short statute limitations and at that time . DNA testing was showing they were its case after case where we would have somebody in jail .
You’d have proof.
On rape and we’d have a hit for another rape and they still we’re going to be let out because the statute of limitations , was in place. So we’ve , we’ve come a long way and hearing the stories that are out there and women just deciding and man that there is no shame in this and they don’t want to be silenced anymore , we realized people are realizing oh my gosh , they’re hearing their grandmother story their mother stories their sister store it’s hitting home . So we know it’s a really serious an issue and I think people are going to say let her speak .
It sounds like at this point and I’m speaking with you on Monday. It sounds like she will get a chance to be heard our White is enough . You know what , if they come to the conclusion then there you know well either this was something that happened in high school and should be dismissed or glossed over or that she isn’t you know not to be believed . These are the the Republicans on the Judiciary Committee . What then .
Well , in the first matter that you brought up about the fact that it’s something that happened a long time ago. I hope that nobody , except that the public or all of that . The Senators that are involved . Now if we were talking about someone who is alleging some kind of aggressive kissing or something you know you might be able to chalk that up to you know I a young high school boy , just not . Not sure how to how to how to appropriately go forward with a girl , but that’s not what she is alleging she’s alleging a very I’m violent act where she’s thrown on a bed , where she is her clothes are being ripped off well she’s afraid you know who where her mouth is being covered when she starts to scream that she may be killed . That’s , that’s another category of of of an incidents that cannot be ignored . And I think what people need to understand is , this is not a courtroom . We don’t need to prove this beyond a reasonable doubt . He’s not , he’s not up and potentially , but he didn’t go to jail over this . This is to see if he’s qualified . If he has the character to hold a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land , and that requires the highest standard somewhat of in Peterborough character and a past incident of of attempted sexual assault . Even if it happened a long time ago that’s disqualifying . It is , it certainly should be in 2018 .
I have one more question about this and then we’ll move on to now New York‘s endorsements do you think me too. It is , will provide a climate that will allow red state Democrats to vote against Kavanaugh because the political climate did not allow those vulnerable senators to vote against Thomas .
I do , I do , and I think these these recent elections really point to that. It is such a different time than than 28 years ago , I really do . I don’t . I really think that people will not be able to think about their legacy and think that they can vote in favor . If she testifies if she’s credible if people believe her that they will be able to vote in favor of Kavanagh they asked this , they should just start all over , and if I could just add one quick thing that we just really into , you know this . This business of the letters that were written 65 women coming forward , we see this over and over , that somehow if we get , it’s like a saw if we get enough enough women to say I don’t he didn’t try to rape me it’s somehow discredits the one , the person who came forward to say but he did try to rape me .
One doesn’t negate the other.
It does not and it’s it’s it’s you know it’s , it’s really just off the mark completely , and the idea that Senator Grassley , wants to get the 2 of them on the phone to talk it just really indicates that he does not understand how serious sexual assault is how much it is , it’s in the fabric of our culture. Since the beginning of the founding of this country and that we need to do a lot more to change that and environment and we shouldn’t have to leaders in our government proceeding in this manner . It’s completely off the mark completely inappropriate .
We have about a minute and a half and I wanted to ask you about now. New York‘s endorsements you got most of them right on the money . Cuomo local re Ramos Biaggi Andrea Stewart Cousins someone some not so much like David Villa ski , how did you make these determinations .
Well , as a statewide organization. It’s really important for me that the people who are on the ground have the biggest voice and the biggest decision in Crewe in their area . They support because if they’re the ones who are working with them on a daily basis and if the state organization comes in and ruled against them we in effect we are cutting off their power and influence . And that’s the last thing that I wanna to do , we are much stronger together , and our central New York chapter really stop guilt felt very strongly about Mr. Alexei and he’s worked with them and so that’s who they wanted to go with . So we , we certainly respected that wholeheartedly .
Well , they are back Rachel may now that that she’s won the Democratic nomination or you know she she will likely win the Democratic nomination.
I’m speaking a little bit out of turn. But I am I’m sure that they . I’m sure that that will happen .
It’s quite a trans formative time that we’re , we’re going through. We’ve been speaking with now . New York‘s President Sonia Osorio always good to speak with you thank you thank you so much .
