We do look forward to hearing from you today . Also here with us from Phoenix , Arizona is a man , the Black Horse . She’s an activist and a social worker she comes to us from the DNA nation our pleasure to have her here . Also joining us today from Telegraph Oklahoma is Rebecca Neagle she’s a writer and advocate and Rebecca is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation my pleasure to welcome her to the discussion and Rebecca . I want to give you a moment of course that there’s anything that you heard Amanda talking about that really resonated with you or things that you’re thinking . I want to give you that moment and go ahead , let’s start there . Welcome , Rebecca .
Yeah , I think he has some for having and I’m honored beyond the show , especially with them in a black horse done so much important work and not just on this issue , but also around racist mascots , you know I think one thing that’s important for people to keep in mind with you know by exports and Hakkari and thought they exist with an unwed then taken real representation of the know people and so you know we’re not in textbooks when I’m on television when not in the mood. And so the non-needed public when you know understanding of identity and thinking about contemporary native people are really only have these harmful stereotypes to draw upon and I think another point that’s really important is you know specifically around like the map , it’s you know a lot , public opinion and social science research around , you know , how does that actually affect people that fact what need is people think of ourselves and what non-native people think about and you know what the research shows . Specifically , the work of Dr. Stephanie Freiburg showed is that and how they’re really damaging effect even on people who say that it’s honoring and so Cup played the washing in football team , you know people who said that they supported or you know why . It in fact colleges with any enough God . She said that they supported it tended to actually have more negative views I’ve neither people to uphold their invisibility and not think that were contemporary that we still exists and to support netting negative stereotypes about you know that we’re lazy about you know we’re not going to keep our info I think that we , when people like you know Andy Corporation bear these .
Costumes are really about honoring need of American. I think that that’s lip service . And when we look at that intact . This type of leases imagery clearly harmful .
You know it. We hear that see mine too and we do talk about mascots and and it’s interesting how how much this conversation is related to the folks . What are your thoughts today . One 809 9-6 2-8 4 Kate . Let’s go to our 4 mines . We’re going to hear from a caller Arianna in Idaho . Thank you for giving us a ring go ahead you’re on here .
How are you well. While I do agree that it can sometimes you know come off offensive . I just feel like something we heard a society where we do get a little to us some a bid to the extent where maybe those people who are dressing up as in end if we do get a little too angry and how you know this contention in our heart against them . He won’t be Ezra Sassoon that’s too you know listening to why maybe it does offend . So I think , well it is Terry’s awareness and we have to , you know maybe been aware of people stealing . I think we just need to all be careful not to be too offended or else it kind of contributes to the war . I did grow in California and I went to high school where our mascot wasn’t Indian and we had to that changing it , but our school is really , really emphasize the importance of wearing why , instead of just you know , we had a group of kids that were speaking out saying this is what we need to change it . We kind of had to tone down their anger and make sure that we were educating why and we had to do it in a way that’s more receptive listening to it and so I just think it’s it’s it’s a hard one to do because we have to just be careful not to , but to get too angry about it or else people won’t listen .
All right. Arianna , thank you for your call . Share your thoughts too . All opinions are welcome 1-809 6-2 8-4 8 . Let’s go now to Cameron in Phoenix , Arizona listening in online Cameron thank you forgiven us a ring . You’re on here .
He has a your morning just like to say yes , I’m an avenue to mark I’m ashamed of Montana and I would just like to say why don’t we clean up our own backyard before we go complaining about our neighbors. That being said I mean by most specifically powers . If you look at it do cultural of all Native Americans eagle feathers were held in high regard . Whether it was a as war was there and through or religious it was and through when you look at our culture today and they’re everywhere , I mean they treat the sacred eagle parts like there .
You know , just some object when in fact most cultures tell them highly significant. So that being said , I think we should look in our own backyard before we start trying to get offended and rather about costumes . When I think we ourselves are masquerading .
All right. Cameron . Thank you for your call there in Phoenix , Arizona , your thoughts today are also welcome at 996-284-8 let’s take one more call we got caller in White River Arizona tuned in today on key in in B . We’re going to say hi to low Pinot . Thank you for calling .
Am I on the air now.
You are on the air in the penal go ahead.
Okay. Now where where we getting out of line here is just sort of all once year thing we could go out dressed up in costumes due to why people get offended when Native Americans are dressed like white people or the Afro-Americans just like white people a surfer once a year bang for living near the kiddies to dress up and go out and get some candy . I think , well , again , will be at hand .
Now again we had a ham is talking about NASCAR from Thailand from the Pearl. It’s all I have . I don’t handle to keep it down low if the candy and none whereby the costume how clear and how to .
I write Lou Pinot. Thank you for giving your opinion 1-809 9-6 2-8 48 is the number to join us turn back to our guests Amanda , any thoughts on what we’re hearing from our callers .
Yes , I think that there’s sort of this.
Feeling I think and and we saw this year about the mascot issue in the struggle and trying to , you know , address that is that there is this sort of idea that we don’t want it and white people. Don’t we want to be 9th he want to . We don’t want to cause .
You know trouble you know it just might then be you know that , but that’s sort of idea , I think you know any time that there’s change Hank communities or in the world or where anywhere there’s there’s always going to be discord there’s going to be , you know issues is going to be , as I was going to be pretty not , it’s not a glamor and fame it there’s going to be.
Problems and and you know I think that shows that we are doing something that changing don’t change their minds.
We can’t sugar coat racism. We can’t , we can’t try to make things less offensive because they’re not getting to the core issues of these societal problems . These are : racism is a societal issue that needs to be confronted and in the apples .
And what of up to one of the point that the callers raised that we shouldn’t do this with anger. What did you think when you heard that .
Well , I don’t think that we should probably tell our people you know how we should not you know any time that you’re someone inflict something you you’re allowed to feel anger you’re allowed to feel upset you’re allowed to greet you’re allowed you’re allowed to mourn your loss and had in and I think that’s telling people that it’s not okay to feel this film , you know. And then , so I think that we should allow people to feel how they feel , because we are something bad has happened to our people . You know it’s just exactly with recently there was a a woman on social media who dressed up for hell .
